Here is a method from the Leaders Lab called the SOON FUNNEL that can help you with problem-solving, either by yourself or with the team!
It is in 4 steps:
- Start by defining together what Success looks like.
What does it look like when we have solved the problem? - What Obstacles are we facing?
Now we have the problem definition and understand what we want to achieve. - What are our Options?
Here you can even do an @AFFINITY MAP to produce many ideas, and a @NUF test to see which options are more doable than others. - What are our Next steps?
Over time, if the team goes through the process enough it will become a natural go-to method, and they can do it faster and better.
The SOON FUNNEL can help immensely with problem-solving, but it is also beneficial when you identify moments where you can coach your team members. Essentially helping them help themselves!
These are main coaching moments according to the Leader Lab:
- Conundrum: Someone asks you how to handle their conundrum (like a problem or decision) and either has the capacity to solve it on their own or can build skills or confidence by doing it.
- Complaint: Someone complains to you about a person, a situation, or a conflict.
- Confidence: For example, if someone is insecure about making a decision, you can go through the Soon Funnel with them. That way you don't take over the decision, but help them get there on their own.
- Completion: Someone has reached their goal or completed a project.
